Lockheed Martin, one of the largest Defense Companies in the world was tasked to find the best sewage transfer pump for a new fleet of US Government ships. They turned to the US Navy to gather 3M Naval Maintenance records. This shows maintenance cost and details across all of the US Navy on equipment they operate.
Based on this data Lockheed Martin put together a Total Cost Analysis that compared twenty-five 3-inch Eddy Pumps with controllers to twenty-five of the leading centrifugal pumps. This information spanned 4 years from 2002 to 2006.
This analysis compared 4 key items, Acquisition Cost, Overhaul & Replacement cost, Corrective Actions, and finally Maintenance cost.

High End Seal-Support System for Eddy Pumps Explained

The mechanical seal is the most crucial component of a pump. If it fails, the pump fails. For this reason, Eddy Pump's engineering team has spent many years working with the largest seal manufacturing companies in the world. We achieved the goal of developing the market's longest-lasting mechanical seal system to take on high solid slurries that are abrasive and corrosive.
This Plan 53a self-contained dual mechanical seal system can come with Tungsten Carbide or Silicon Carbide faces and does not need external flushing water.
This system contains a 2.8-gallon pressurized tank with a 50% glycol/water mixture so that it does not freeze in cold environments. The tank is pressurized at 20-30 psi and if it drops lower, a simple bike pump can repressurize it.
You can see in the sight-glass that it’s filled, and this container is pressurized.
This fluid is then recirculated over the seal faces via the integrated pumping ring to protect the seal, creating the optimal long-lasting seal environment. If the pump is run dry, the seals will not overheat and crack.
Maintenance of this system requires periodic checks on seal gauge pressure and fluid levels through the site glass. Eddy Pump also has an optional embedded sensor package that will send alarms if the pressure drops below 10 psi or the fluid level drops. We can even automate the system to shut down if these crucial seal parameters are not met.
No seal is bullet-proof, but Eddy Pump has designed the closest thing to it!

The first clip of this demo video shows an Eddy Pump moving Red Mud from a Bauxite Mining Operation, for Rio Tinto. Transport rates up to 50 percent solids by volume and slurry viscosity of 1000 centipoise were achieved, at pumping distances over 1.5 miles. The sample material can barely flow out of the cup!
2nd clip. The diver-operated Eddy Pump produces over 75 cubic yards of material per hour, for Sempra Energy’s Energy Costa Azul LNG Facility in Mexico.
3rd clip The 6-inch Eddy Pump is pumping over 70% solids by volume at rates of over 300 cubic meters per hour. No other pump can make sand stack like this!
4th clip On the left is a 6-inch Eddy Pump Excavator Attachment pumping coal ash for Newmont Mining in Indonesia and on the right is a 10-inch Dragflow Pump. The Eddy Pump moves twice the amount of solids. Look at the thickness of that flow, versus the watery discharge on the right.
5th The Eddy Pump 4-inch Subdredge was showcased on the Discovery Channel! The Subdredge was used for mining gold under the ice in the Bering Sea. As you can see it was lowered underneath the ice into the sea where it pumped sand, gravel and gold. No other technology has ever produced as much gold as the Eddy Pump in such short periods of time. The Subdredge was able to out-produce 5 divers. At the end of the day, the Subdredge won the show and was averaging 3-ounces of Gold an hour!
The 4-inch Subdredge driving into a concrete-lined cooling water intake canal for the largest Power Plant in Mexico CFE. The Subdredge was able to pump material at solid rates of over 70% by volume and up to 150 cubic yards an hour of material. All of this was accomplished with no divers and without having any affect on the liner. The sand was being pumped vertically about 60-feet and horizontally over 1000-ft.

This RTK navigation system provides the horizontal and vertical position along with the machine's altitude. The sensors along with the bundled monitoring software gives dredge operators critical real-time dredge performance information.
Quickly assess reach, depth and the location of where the cutter has already been instantaneously. See a plan and sectional view on the screen. It also allows for a plus or minus half a foot grade tolerance over the entire project and a level production surface.

This first segment features a 10-inch excavator attachment on a floating barge, pumping sand at a distance of close to a mile with 80-ft of elevation, without the use of a booster pump. The pump and cutter head are powered by a hydraulic power unit sitting on the barge.
Achieve production rates up to 400 cubic yards of material per hour at solids rates of up to 70%.
The cutterhead in this video is used to break up material and agitate it for increased solids uptake.
Pump Attachment agitators include cutterhead, high pressure water jetting ring and also a liner safe wheel setup to prevent liner damage.
Land Based Long Boom Deployment
Another popular use for our equipment is for sand and aggregate mining. Here you see a sand pit mining operation using their existing excavator coupled with a long boom for 65 feet of reach. The discharge hose can be left floating or plumbed to run over the boom arm.
This setup is ideal for sand and aggregate pits, mine tailings ponds, canals, poly lined sludge pools and more.
Crane Based Deployment
This barge unloading application is a crane based deployment. The featured unit has a high-pressure water jetting ring option for material breakup and liquefaction of material. A similar setup can be used for railcar unloading or desludging applications.

By mixing bentonite, p-gravel, and quick-gel, a drilling mud mixture was created with a specific gravity of 1.8 and viscosity of 26 centipoise. The drilling mud was left to harden for three days. With the power of one 6-inch Eddy Pump, we were able to pump 24 barrels per minute through a 400-ft loop, which equates to four times the production of the leading centrifugal pumps. Kevin Tweed, Marine Bay Services, said that “the purpose of this job was to do a pilot study for the separation of elemental mercury from dredge spoils in real-time, utilizing a 6-inch Eddy Pump dredge-mounted excavator attachment and a 6-inch Eddy Pump booster pump.”
The pump and cutter-head suction dredge work in conjunction to make this the optimal dredging system for handling compact material, highly viscous materials and pumping high solids.
This pumping system can easily pump slurry up to 4500-ft without the need for a booster pump, the company stated. For this application, a booster pump was used to move high solids roughly 5,000 ft.
